Through the Concept of Edge: The Concept of Error
Curated by Alexandros Psychoulis & Yannis Arvanitis
An error appears as a malefaction.
The malefaction refers to a procedure.
This procedure is defined.
Its definition suggests a norm.
The norm may be altered by the error.
The concept refers to the idea of an exception in the way productive sets work. These procedures may exist or may be invented. They may refer to ideas and notices of an extended field of theory and practice. This new mode of production after an exception may even be contradicting to the former one but it remains productive, leading to new ideas and thoughts. In this paradox, new qualities and functions perform. The system uses its capacities upon new input. It is a new condition were something that primarily appears as problematic redefines the procedure. It is a new paradigm regarding the alteration of the concept of a mistake, of a false, of an error into something new that leads to new narrations and performances.
In this context, the edge becomes the condition where the error does not destruct any procedure; it suggests a new status were the procedure is redefined in a new, unforeseen productive mode.
In the terms of SPIDER – Athens Festival (November 10’) The visual arts workshop invites 6 artists to explore the concept of “error”. The selection of artists forms a group whose practice is related to the above ideas.
The first aim is to develop a common web platform of discussions in cooperation with SPIDER’s web site, monitored by the curators. Material, ideas and works will gather by the participants. This procedure will articulate, extend and shape the context of “error” before the workshop in Athens. The next step concludes and presents the material in situ during the workshop. The final phase will be an actual show after the workshop were works developed in the context of error will be installed.
The estimated budget for the completion of the project is 700-1000 € for each of six artists’ commissions. Also, technical equipment such as laptops/pc (5) and projectors (5) as well as an A3 printer is required for the workshop and the transformation of its space. The technical equipment needs will be finally defined after the commissions during September 10’.
After the workshop in Athens the submitted material will be presented in the next workshops of SPIDER in cooperation with the coordinators. This could be either in a digital form through SPIDER web site or other digital or physical way of presentation or the actual realization of a show. The actual planning of this follow up phase will be defined in agreement with the SPIDER group and is also related to budget availability for travel expenses and fees for curators and artists.
Project L.I.G.H.T. (Let It Glow Here Tonight)
Concept by Urša Vidic
The group: Project L.I.G.H.T.(Let It Glow Here Tonight) is a platform for visual and intermedia art in the SPIDER Network. Its purpose is:
To form a platform for young perspective artists in the fields of visual art, intermedia art and architecture.
To establish a dialogue between different artistic disciplines which use the same ideological platform.
Researching the perceptional, experimental, critical and participation forms of art.
Defending the philosophy of spontaneity and connecting.
The idea of Project L.I.G.H.T.(Let It Glow Here Tonight) group is based on forming an international art group, promoting its production activities, performance art and events within the SPIDER Network festival events. In addition to various artistic disciplines of Network SPIDER (performance art, visual art and literature) it establishes a wider communication and production network of different visual, intermedia artists and architects.
In form the project is based on spatial intervention of selected festival event locations. The ideological basis for spatial interventions will be based on research and experimentation with the art of light (Light Art). Light art is a form of visual art where the basis for expression is a light matter, also relying on artificial or natural light sources, and the architecture of a particular area. The project: Project L.I.G.H.T. will be based on the concept of light and its transformation into artistic form as the minimum effective means of changing and transforming our perception of architectural spaces. As the light is an elementary, primary thing in our visual perception and thus has the most direct impact on our perception, is seems appropriate for Project LIGHT and a visually complex and interesting means by which the visual part of the network SPIDER is addressing the viewers. According to this, visitors will receive intense visual and perceptual stimuli that will be happening on a particular series of presentations of dance productions.
Along with the listed motivations for the choice and limitations in forming an artistic language through light matter the reason is in the understanding of light itself. It is deeply embedded in everyday environment, irrespective of geographical and political boundaries. The concept of light is also a basic element in creation of the world in many religions, containing rich symbolism of single and dualistic meanings, is a source of scientific research and ultimately life itself. This multitude in understanding the light is the basis for many artistic ideas and is as such selected as a conceptual center and for development of the visual project in Project L.I.G.H.T.
The project Project L.I.G.H.T. will be divided into several phases, in line with the operation of the entire network.
PHASE 0
In this phase the project Project L.I.G.H.T. will be looking for three potential designers / architects interested on an ideological basis for developing joint project in a two year cooperation. First meeting of the group will occur between 29. 10. 2010 – 31. 10. 2010 in Athens where the first Network SPIDER festival will be taking place. This meeting of all three contractors is for introduction and developing the first ideological bases mostly on theoretical level. The objective of Phase 0 is the creation of plans and ideas for future project development within the Network Spider.
Phase 0 is designed to connect the three artists/designers from: France, Greece and Slovenia. Thus we form the platform for production of a site-specific artwork that uses a common goal as a basic starting point based on a unified language/form and possibilities of artistic development or Light-art. The artists/designers involved with the project Project L.I.G.H.T. will base the ideological foundation of the form itself, according to the characteristics and specificity of a place and the whole context of a specific festival event.
PHASE 1
Given that the SPIDER Network festival events are designed as demonstrational platforms for networking of individual organizations and individuals, the Project LIGHT will focus in the first phase on spatial interventions in architectural interior of the festival sites with intention to:
Link Project L.I.G.H.T. coherently with other artistic disciplines;
Form a strong visual correlation with other segments of the work in the festival;
Simultaneously build and develop an independent visual form, which appeals to viewers and visitors of festival events with strong perceptual and experiential/sensory elements in a given space and time.
The task of artists/designers in Phase 1 is a gradual realization of spatial intervention in architectural interior. The group Project L.I.G.H.T. is working with Network SPIDER to gain funding for realization of the project.
According to the acquired financial production means the project Project L.I.G.H.T. will be implemented:
16. 03. 2011 – 20. 03. 2011 LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA
24. 10. 2011 – 06. 11. 2011 LYON, FRANCE
Along with the major festivals events in Athens, Ljubljana and Lyon the Network SPIDER will organize smaller festivals – Satellites. Given the financial resources and an agreement between the group on presentation of projects, there is a possibility that the project is also present in:
14. 01. 2012 – 15. 01. 2012 ZAGREB, CROATIA (SATELLITE)
December 2011 Salzburg Austria (SATELLITE)
PHASE 2
In the second phase of the Network SPIDER, which is dedicated to the final presentation of dance productions, the group Project L.I.G.H.T. will focus on the design and implementation/realization of spatial intervention in architectural exterior of the selected festival locations. As phase 1 deals with interior space, so phase 2 shifts outwards to exterior. In this manner, the project Project L.I.G.H.T. strives for constant progress and development of complex ideas for superior production products, based on the common idea of three artists from partner countries and organizations.
The selected artists/designers will be commissioned to find a common language/form and to realize the spatial interventions on architectural facades in three different locations in Athens, Ljubljana, Lyon in 2012. The idea of changing the façade stems from the same artistic and perceptual starting point as in the first phase of the project with addition to increased promotion and visibility of the finished festival. It’s also meant to highlight the responsible developers of project Project L.I.G.H.T.
